Brewery Quay started life as a Victorian brewery but it has since been re-established as a multi purpose attraction incorporating a variety of shops and restaurants. There is also The Timewalk, an interesting exhibition highlighting six centuries of local history and Discovery, a hands-on multimedia attraction with over 60 exhibits. www.brewers-quay.co.uk

Deep Sea Adventure (01305 760690) at the Old Harbour is both entertaining and educational. It’s a great day out for kids and adults alike with an interest in learning about underwater exploration. You’ll find out all about the history of Weymouth’s harbour and local shipwrecks. The Deep Sea Adventure also includes Sharky’s, a new all weather adventure play area for kids.

Weymouth’s Sea Life Park at Lodmoor Country Park allows you to see an incredible variety of marine life face to face from sharks to shrimps. You’ll learn about Weymouth’s own sea life and even get the chance to become a shark cadet. There’s also an otter and seal sanctuary and new for 2002 a penguin sanctuary, enough to keep the whole family occupied for the entire day. www.sealife.co.uk

Nothe Fort at the mouth of Weymouth’s harbour, is a Victorian fort that has now been lovingly restored to house a museum outlining the history of Weymouth’s costal defence. The fort also has recreations of what life was like during its military occupations and offers great views out over Weymouth and the sea. www.fortressweymouth.co.uk

The beautiful thatched village of Swannery, just on the outskirts of Weymouth, is home to the Abbotsbury Swannery www.abbotsbury-tourism.co.uk/swannery.html which has the only managed colony of Mute swans in the world. Visitors are taken on a trip by horse and cart to the Swannery and can then wander freely amongst the swans. For details call the Abbotsbury Estate Tourism Office (Tel: 01305 871130).

A visit to Weymouth wouldn’t be complete without a trip out to the Isle of Portland. A great way to arrive is by the Portland Ferry even though Portland isn’t actually an island. Once you’re there take a look at Portland Castle  that dates back to 1539, built as protection from the French armed forces. Also worth a visit is a tour of Portland Bill, Portland’s very own lighthouse
